STEVE: Social Terminology Enhancement through Vernacular Engagement

STEVE is better known as The Art Museum Social Tagging Project. Interestingly enough, some creators of STEVE are friends with the creators of PAM, my design journal entry 1 subject. STEVE is also along a similar vein, in that several collaborators from various musems are doing a study where they invite people to log into their site and suggest keyword tags for artwork. This is also very similar to sites like flickr or de.lic.ious. From talking to several members of the Guggenhiem project team, the data collected from this study would help inform the creation of online museum databases and digital keiosks in museums that would help museum-goers to navigate the collections and look for work they are interested in by style, subject, color, or whatever topics are availible in the database. I believe that the use of these folksomic tags in addition to standardized classifications would serve every type of museum visitor from the plebeian to the aesthete.

The research goals of STEVE include the study of incorporating foloksomic tagging systems with standardized ones, and creating a CVS (open source history/database of software development) that is availible for other museums and galleries to use. The creators also want people to feel more connected and included in the museum setting rathar than feeling intimidated or uneducated. Below is a screenshot of the online prototype.
