--What is PAM?
|
The Perpetual Art Machine "is a community for video artists, curators, writers, therorist, educators, collectors, and enthusiasts...an on line gallery and database of video art...(and) a traveling video installation."
|
--How does it work? |
"The website feeds our installation machines. Both the database and video content work together at exhibition venues displaying works simultaneously and individually. The works play off each other, informing each other by association or differenciation, highlighting through the display system their individual qualities."

Design Challenges |
In my opinion, the greatest design challenges that [PAM] faces is a sustained ability to self curate. In the future, if it wants to remain both democratic and a source of video art (what is video art?) the participants and viewers of the videos must act as a filter to suggest suitable lables. For example, there are no judgments as to what is good video art and bad video art, just descriptive tags that lead the curator to make decisions as to what they want to view. There must be some authority in place to make sure the labels/tags are in fact, a description of the piece. A piece can have more than one label.

--Tags and Lables: is the Folksomic approach appropriate? |
"[PAM] MAPS FOLKSOMIES ON TO THE TABLES OF THE OLD-WHITE-BOY INSTITUTIONS." I think one of the strengths of [PAM] is the democratization of the labeling process. Traditionally, there is power in naming and labeling things. As opposed to a museum or gallery curator, the images are grouped together by the force of many. New ideas and interpretations of the meaning of the various tags and labels are brought forth in the viewing of the videos, which act to define the label, at the same time the label serves to define the moving image piece. In this sense, [PAM] helps cultivate and support a living language.
Nam June Paik: "In my experimental TV, the words "QUALITY" means only the CHARACTER, but not VALUE. A is different from B, but not that A is better than B. Sometimes I need red apple Sometimes I need red lips.
